The great thing about ska is that it always survives. It has been what, 5 or 6 decades? That is pretty long lived. Nothing slows it down & it keeps us dancing. And us ska fans? We survive too, trends or not, it makes no difference, we just like ska. We survive, ska survives, long live ska! Yay!

Most of the music in today’s podcast was purchased at Amoeba Records. If you’re ever in California be sure to visit an Amoeba Records in Hollywood, Berkley or San Francisco or just make sure to support your independent record store where ever you are.

In the last few years, what was a tiny genre in my musical library has exploded, and that genre is chiptune. Now some chiptune artists have come together and created a 9 track reggae, ska, dub, and everything in between compilation all played on a variety of video game consoles. It is a fun little album to be sure. Much respect to Euan Lynn for putting this together! (Yeah, I’m late to the party as always, this was released almost a year ago… I missed it, so I’m guessing others may’ve too.)
After doing a wickedly awesome interview (you’ll hear it on the first of June) I realized that, damn, I’m kinda out of touch w/ a lot of what’s currently going on in the ska world. Try as I might, I basically missed the last 5 years. So, I ask you, my dear listeners, what bands should I check out? I’m constantly trolling ska forums, myspace, facebook and the local record shops looking for stuff, but hey, every little bit helps, so if you have some direction, lay it on me!
Lunch is settling or you’re watching the clock to get out of the office, depending on what coast you’re on, so I offer up a bit more Johnny Socko Day goodness. It was either on the old old website or on their MySpace that they put up 2 remixes. Of course you’re mileage may vary on this kinda thing, but they’re fun. A nice little cherry on the top of this delicious Johnny Socko Day!
Last year on May 6th my friend Bryan Wolford decided that it was Johnny Socko Day. This set off a flurry of twitter messages and facebook updates by him, me, our friend Charlie Weewax and my friend Maire making reference to Johnny Socko songs and albums as well as links to Johnny Socko videos. Oh, Johnny Socko was a band from Indiana that mixed ska, punk, funk and good old fashioned rock n roll into the highest energy show you’d ever see. It seriously was the greatest thing ever, being at a Socko show and dancing your ass off, and hey if you danced well you’d get the Johnny Socko Dance Prize, awarded for being the freakiest freak on the dance floor. I got the dance prize a few times, at the top of this post is a picture of me with it. Yup, its the VHS video for Young MC’s “Bust A Move”. I’m w/ guitarist/vocalist Chris and saxophone/vocalist Josh at a show at SOP’s (in the old location on the corner of Main & Madison) in Peoria IL. Oh, and I’m totally wearing my Johnny Socko bowling shirt in that picture… yeah, I was that guy…
Here we go, it is interview time again, and this time I’m talking to the Ska/Metal band Do It With Malice from Buffalo, NY. On the line with me is the guitarist/vocalist Chris Delmont and alto saxophone player Thom Kramer. We talk about their May tour & their album “the Burned Over District” We also specifically talk about their song “Commodity” from “the Burned Over District” which we use to close out this episode.
