23min of Ska : May Mix Tape : Side A (part one)

Getting older makes on nostalgic for their youth and instead of just wallowing in it, I’m taking you on that journey. Throughout May I’ll be providing you with a 90min mix tape divided into 4 parts each Thursday. That’s not all, this mix tape will be set in the 90′s, when mix tapes were still king. The average year will more than likely be 1996 or 1997 when we come to the end of it. This is filled with music that evokes those years more than any other and are all mix tape “classic” tracks tracks for me. I hope you enjoy this month’s ride down memory lane for me. This is the stuff that got me into ska as a kid, it is my roots, and I don’t care that they are showing.

Goldfinger – King for a Day (Goldfinger ’96)
Less Than Jake – How’s My Driving, Doug Hastings? (Losing Streak ’96)
MU330 – Hoosier Love (Press ’94)
Reel Big Fish – S.R. (Everything Sucks ’94)
Mad Caddies – Mike Booted Our First Song, So We Recorded This… (Short Music for Short People comp ’99)
the Siren Six! – No Compromise (the Voice with the Built in Promise ’97)
Big D & the Kids Table – 51 Gardner (Good Luck ’99)
Skankin’ Pickle – I Missed the Bus (Skankin’ Pickle Fever ’92)
the Mighty Mighty Bosstones – Someday I Suppose (Don’t Know How to Party ’93)

This is part one of a 90min ska mix tape from the nineties running each Thursday throughout May.

Special : Behind the Scene Vol 1 : Tazy Phyllipz of the Ska Parade

In this episode I’m taking you a bit behind the ska scene such as it is, to people who have an imprint on the scene with out being in a band or running a label. In this episode I’m talking to Tazy Phyllipz of the long running ska radio show “the Ska Parade”. We talk about a lot of the bands that have been on “the Ska Parade” since it started in 1989. Not only that but we talk a lot about the upcoming “Viva Ska Vegas” ska show on April 28th. With Tazy and I being old ska guys we tell a lot of stories, and while my original intention was to fill this episode w/ a lot of music, I just couldn’t bear to cut any of us talking (besides a few seconds at the beginning where were both like “hello..?” “uh… hello?” and a bit near the end where we talk about Madness that was dropped for time). I hope you enjoy it, we had a lot of fun talking, and I think it is good to get to know someone like Tazy just a little bit better.

23min of Ska : It’s Complicated

This episode’s theme is songs that have only appeared on compilations. Say you’re a big fan of a band and have all of their albums, you still may have never heard these songs! That’s a shame, because there are some classic tracks on here! Seriously, I believe this is the only song from the Silencers that had ever been released. If I’m wrong, tell me, I really would like to know! Also, I think I may’ve stretched it with the final song but it is classified as a “video compilation” so I’d say I’m in the clear!

MU330 – Please Don’t Run (Ska is Dead ’07)
the Toasters – the Stage (Ska Island ’97)
Johnny Socko – Art Show (A Polka) (Misfits of Ska ’94)
Red Soul Community – Anymore (the Soul of Pum Pum Hotel Vol. 1 ’11)
the Silencers – Policeman (Give ‘Em the Boot ’97)
Blind Spot – As Far as Thieves Go (This is Raj and This is Ska ’95)
Greenhouse – 822 Anywhere (Smash Your Radio! ’98)
the Mighty Mighty Bosstones – Common Decency (Video Stew ’97)

Why I Like Ska (Day Four of Five: Attend a Show Alone, Leave with New Friends)

I can’t tell you how many times this scenario has played out, I try to get some of my buddies to go to a ska show with me and they’re all busy. I don’t let that stop me and I go to the show anyway. Being a loner at a show is an odd feeling, but at a ska show that never seems to last long. Ska fans are a friendly bunch, that’s just how it works. I know this isn’t just exclusive to ska music, the sense of real community, but that kind of thing is always great when ever it pops up and I’m really glad the ska scene has that. It is just the pure friendliness and looking out for each other that is so amazing. I’ve made both extremely fun, hang for the show and the rest of the night kind of acquaintances and amazing lifelong friends at ska shows! Once I was seeming MU330 and my glass fell off and before I could say “Hold up! My glasses!” and start looking for them, 2 strangers popped up with the frames and the lens that fell out. At the very worst, when I don’t end up becoming friends with any fellow crowd members I end up getting chummy with the bands. While my future wife is not a ska fan she knows what the scene means to me and encourages me to go to shows and have fun, in fact she suggested I do a ska podcast about a year and a half before I actually started 23min of Ska. She’s great, the ska scene is great and plenty of my ska pals will be at that wedding too! I’ve lived a wonderful life and ska music had a lot to do with the excellent pals I’ve met along the way.

23min of Ska : Uncontrollable

Well this just may be the latest I’ve gotten one of these online! Here we go! I’ve tried to gather not only a bunch of good songs, but also a handful of overlooked songs from some awesome bands! I’ve pulled from my 7″ collection, import CDs, albums that have went out of print and even some from albums that were never officially released!

If you’re in a ska band and would like to be featured or if you know some music that you think I should hear for future inclusion, please email me at radjose[at]gmail[dot]com! I’ll play most anything.

23min of Ska : Commencement

It’s the 23rd, that means it is time for 23min of ska! Yay!

The first of what I hope will be many more podcasts. As I continue I hope to get more in depth with the bands and music used than on this first episode, but this should give you a good idea of the direction of the type of music I will be using as time goes on. I’ll admit I played it a little safe and unoriginal here, but it was while listening to these songs that I got the idea for this show. Once a month, 23 minutes of ska, nothing more, nothing less.
