23min of Ska : May Mix Tape : Side B (part one)

Back with more straight outta the 90s! If you don’t know some of these bands, well, I feel sorry for you, because these are bands that would TEAR DOWN THE HOUSE LIVE! Ok, I haven’t seen all of these bands live, but the ones I have, I can vouch for. Secret Society rocked the back room of the Peoria Pizza Works, Stretch Armstrong stole the show from Mustard Plug and Hepcat, doctormanette snapped me out a mid show stupor in at a Rockford skate park and then made the entire crowd at the Metro in Chicago forget that they were there to see the Aquabats, and seeing Unsteady at the Knitting Factory is flat out one of my personal life high-lights. The Scofflaws are a true classic in the ska scene, so check them out right away. Also hit up Punch the Clown who was always a ska compilation ringer, and when you get an album of theirs and hear how great all the songs are it is even more clear how great they were. Speaking of ska compilations, Insatiable and this song was the shining star on the “Ska: the 3rd Wave Vol. II” that just about everyone I knew had a copy of growing up. It was a decent comp, but that song was just killer! It’s a excellent way to get us to the midway point of side B.

Secret Society – Did it Again (Can I Borrow Your Beard? ’97)
Stretch Armstrong – Drool (Lollygag ’94)
Punch the Clown – Leaving (the Secret Life of Punch the Clown ’98)
the Scofflaws – Nude Beach (Ska in Hi-Fi ’95)
doctormanette – Happiness (the Same Thing Over & Over ’99)
Unsteady – Bad Attitude (Tightrope ’96)
Insatiable – GPC’s (Can’t Get Enough ’94)

This is part three of a 90min ska mix tape from the nineties running each Thursday throughout May.

23min of Ska : Hey Ladies

What’s this? A bunch of songs about the ladies? Hells yeah it is! Go crazy! But, for reals, several odes to women, how awesome they are, how much they are missed and even a few about how they’ve done ya wrong. Oh, and that little guy in the picture, that’s my lil two tone cat Mr. Pants. He’s always tryin’ to seduce the ladies. Oh, that Mr. Pants!

Rude City Riot – Victoria (Nothin’ But Time ’11)
Squid 58 – Maria (Dismantled ’07)
Unsteady – Sally (Tightrope ’96)
the Forthrights – Carla (live in Chicago) (Thanks! ’11)
Spring Heeled Jack – Jolene (Songs from Suburbia ’98)
Cartoon Violence – Teresa (Whatever Happened to the Likely Lad? ’09)
the Agents – Sally Brown (401 ’00)

23min of Ska : Fallen

Oh heck yeah! More ska! This is about as far as I will go cheesy wise for a “Halloween” ska podcast. Firstly, Halloween is over a week away but I won’t deny that it is in the air. Secondly, man oh man, do I hate all the ska related puns that come with it as well. But maybe that’s just me. I sometimes feel a little cheap dipping mostly in to the mid to late 90s ska and ska/punk that makes up my collection, I feel like I’m just not keeping up as well with the more modern acts. But mostly, I hope you still like it, and if you want to educate me, hit me up with an message! I’d like to thank my friend Nicole again for getting me the Sgt. Scagnetti CD. I’d also like to note that Synthetic Elements used to be a fun, energetic young ska/punk band (I’ve got the CDs to prove it) but they’ve grown up to be a fun and energetic punk band who sometimes plays ska. I’m just saying this so if you decide to go pick up their in-print you’ll still get a solid CD, but just not a full ska one. Once again, I hope you all enjoy it!

If you’re in a ska band and would like to be featured or if you know some music that you think I should hear for future inclusion, please email me at radjose[at]gmail[dot]com! I’ll play most anything.
