23min of Ska : Bits

23ska8BITOf all the wack ideas I’ve done on 23min of Ska, this is the most wack. This is either a monumentally stupid idea to drop this episode right now, or an even worse idea to have even made it in the first place! But I just couldn’t help it. I swore I would never really make and episode with chiptune ska, but after hearing that Night Gaunts song and it having sounds that reminded me of video game music, well, like they say: it was on. Are all the songs straight chiptune? Hell no! That’d be boring! A lot of these artists use the computer noises to build off of, others don’t, it’s a mixed bag, just like my episodes normally are. So here it is, either the most daring episode I’ve ever made, or the worst episode I ever made. Or both. Frankly, I like it, and I felt I had to put it out. Look, son, I take risks. Stupid, stupid risks.

00:00 – Night Gaunts – 8 Dollars (Night Guants / Days N Daze split ’15)

07:56 – MicroD – Rebound (Rude Boy comp ’10)
11:00 – Bomb the Music Industry! – Sorry, Brooklyn. Dancing Won’t Solve Anything (Goodbye Cool World ’07)
15:42 – Sudstep – KKK Highway (Chip Ska ’15)
16:11 – Slime Girls – a Cruel Angel Thesis (Ayanami Reggae Ver.) (Vacation Wasteland ’12)
19:41 – Dubmood – Pressure Drop (Atari-Ska L’Attack ’07)

23min of Ska : Sloth

23skaSLOTHCall off of work. Sleep in. Stay in your pajamas. Order out. Don’t flush. Leave the dishes for another day. Forget about opening the shades. Cleaning up is for the birds. It is your life, be as lazy as you want to me. Being productive only brings future work and more mysteries ahead in life, who the hell wants that anyway?

23min of Ska : I Won’t be a Wage Slave

23ska-yellowplaidDidn’t we all make crazy declarations in our youth? Not so much the very young, you know in the vein of “I’m gonna be an (/astronaut//cowboy//president/)” variety. More of the teenage “I’m to be an (/artist//actor//musician/)” kinda thing. Basically, anything to fulfill our inner creativity and get paid for it. Or maybe because, by all costs, we refused to work for “the man” in a “cubicle farm” and become a dreaded “corporate drone.” Maybe that was just me and all my arty friends… In the end most of us got jobs at (more or less) conventional companies, and it isn’t as bad as we though it would be. Maybe the fear of adult assimilation was what we really wanted to avoid, and once we got old enough we realized, hey it isn’t so bad. In the end I’d still rather be and astronaut/cartoonist though.

Bomb the Music Industry! – Tell My Boss, “I Hate You” (Others! Others! ’09)
the Branlarians – Big T Song (the 1st and Maybe the Only! ’13)
the Slackers – If You See My Baby (Lost and Found ’09)
Black Square – Poison (Black Square ’11)
the Mighty Mighty Bosstones – It Can’t Hurt (More Noise & Other Disturbances ’91)
Victims of Circumstance – This Riot Used to be a Party (Roll the Dice ’09)
Stand Out Riot – Spacesuit (Carnival Militia ’09)

23min of Ska : How Dare You Sir or Ma’am!

23ska-bwplaidOver the Summer when I was posting episodes of this podcast, for several episodes in a row I kept getting comments that were, frankly, kinda mean. I like doing this podcast, because I like ska music, traditional as well as stuff like ska/punk. These rude comments were pretty much always on the more ska/punk episodes. Now, said person has stopped coming around to cause some trouble, but as I put this episode together, I just couldn’t help but smile, knowing how much they would hate it. Sometimes I’m a bitch too.

23ska-bwplaidOh my gosh, I’ve just noticed what I’ve been missing lately on this podcast! Ska-Punk! So you better believe that I weaved a some of that into this episode. Not that I dropped any more traditional stuff, it’s just all in a nicer, more balanced blend this time.

23min of Ska : Government Cover Up

After several requests, the theme this month is, ta da, cover songs! I’m not a big fan of ska cover songs, mainly because the idea always seems to be born out of the idea that “this song is great, but what would make it better is a ska version!” and, as much as I love ska, I just don’t subscribe to that thinking. Don’t get me wrong, I totally love cover songs (and if you haven’t been paying attention, I totally love ska too), especially when the covers are inventive or just fit in so well w/ the sound the band usually makes that you don’t even realize that it is a cover. So here are a bit of what I think of when I think of awesome ska cover songs. (At one point the theme was going to be ska bands covering ska bands, but to deny the sharing of the Pavement and TMBG covers would be criminal.)

Bomb the Music Industry! – Gold Soundz! (Under the Influence Vol. 3 ’08)
Reel Big Fish – Veronica Sawyer (Fame, Fortune & Fornication ’09)
Johnny Socko – Man in Disguise (Full Trucker Effect ’97)
Star Fucking Hipsters – Ana Ng (From the Dumpster to the Grave ’11)
the Mighty Mighty Bosstones – Simmer Down (Ska-Core, the Devil & More ’93)
Special AKA – Longshot Kick the Bucket (Too Much Too Young ’80)
Bad Manners – Sally Brown (Sally Brown ’89)
Dan P. – Somewhere in the Between (You by Me: Vol. 1 ’10)

Hey, be a pal, check out these ska records that I’m making over at the Big Ska Gamble, the Georgetown Orbits turn in a great cover of “Domino” by Van Morrison on theirs.

Special : You Call It Vol. 2

So once again I went to the awesome listeners of the show (this time in /r/ska) and asked them what they’d like to hear. I looked at the suggestions, counted them, and considered some of their reasons and it has resulted in this brand new fancy episode. “Super Rad” and “a Better Place, a Better Time” were some of the most suggested songs, so they were picked as the opening and closing tracks. I’d never heard of los Capitanes before, and I’m so glad to have found them now! The other four songs are from bands that I like that, for some reason, I haven’t played as much as I should have! So I thank you listeners for righting that wrong! There was a lot of other great suggestions but a bunch of those bands I had just played in the last few episodes, and I like to keep a good variety going! Thanks again for the help, this was a blast to put together for all of you!

the Aquabats! – Super Rad (the Fury of the Aquabats! ’97)
los Capitanes – Feelin’ Seedy (No Fun Intended ’06)
Bomb the Music Industry! – 25 Hour Goddamn Telethon (Get Warmer ’07)
Mad Caddies – No Hope (Duck and Cover ’98)
Green Room Rockers – Northbound Train (Hoosier Homegrown ’07)
Mustard Plug – You (Evildoers Beware! ’97)
Streetlight Manifesto – a Better Place, a Better Time (Everything Goes Numb ’03)
