23ska-diceIt’s true listeners, we’ve made it to the 6 year mark! I’m not going to lie, I never thought I’d take it this far! I figured I’d give it a good shot for 3 years and see how things go. 23min of Ska : It Leads Up to This

23ska-bwplaidAt the end of the last episode it should be no surprise how I kicked this one off. Yeah, I was in the mood for some 2Tone bands, which then lead me into a listening session of other more traditional ska bands from the era I like to call “before I got into the ska music”. One of the things about ska is that it has so much riches in it, a lot of people focus on the early days with what was coming out of Jamaica, and some even on the British bands of the late ’70s/early ’80s, but there seems to be a lack of love for the late ’80s/early ’90s ska that isn’t ska/punk. As everything else that has to do w/ ska music, I still need to learn a lot more about it! I hope that mixing that sound along w/ some of the UK’s top acts doesn’t offend your listening sensibilities.

the Specials – Rat Race (Rat Race / Rude Buoys Outa Jail ’80)
the Selecter – Tell Me What’s Wrong (Celebrate the Bullet ’81)
Madness – Bed and Breakfast Man (One Step Beyond ’79)
Skaos – Oh Sally (Catch This Beat ’89)
BOP (harvey) – Bread & Circuses (Bread & Circuses ’90)
the Toasters – Night Train (New York Fever ’92)
the Beat – Ranking Full Stop (Tears of a Clown / Ranking Full Stop ’79)

23min of Ska : Alive

If you’re into ska you know the very best thing is ska done live. I can honestly say that I’ve never left a ska show unhappy or disappointed and I can say for a fact that some of the best concerts I’ve ever seen were ska shows! For these reasons I knew that sooner or later I’d be doing a show of all live music, that and a few of these songs are only available live! I’m glad to’ve found “Man in Disguise” played by the band that wrote it! Johnny Socko has covered this for years, but it is nice to hear it from Bop (Harvey) who were working ska in their sound long before some of the rest of these bands even hit the scene. The ever name changing Stretch Magnifico was one of the earliest bands I saw live and you just can’t beat the Toasters! I close it out with the most classic of all Reel Big Fish’s songs. Ska, best when done live, there’s nothing to doubt about that.

If you’re in a ska band and would like to be featured or if you know some music that you think I should hear for future inclusion, please email me at radjose[at]gmail[dot]com! I’ll play most anything.
