23min of Ska : Mix Tape : the ’10s Side A (part 2)

Woohoo, here we go with part two! So many of these bands are ones that I miss all the time. It’s a bit more punky than the last one was, but that’s what we all love about ska, right? It’s multifaceted! I know for a fact that a number of the bands on this episode are not officially broken up but on hiatus, and hey, the Bosstones were on hiatus for 8 years and that wasn’t code for “broken up” so I shan’t push that narrative here! All I know is that I want more from every single one of them! And if there is… tell me, because I want to hear it and it’s obvious that I have managed to miss it!

00:00 – Chase Long Beach – That’s No Moon it’s a Space Station (Gravity is What You Make it ’11)
03:05 – Wobbly Bob – Let’s Get Wasted (Life Lessons for Losers ’11)
06:19 – Must Build Jacuzzi – Everything’s Coming Up Milhouse (Last Place ’18)
10:07 – Small Town Get Up – Wild Like We Were (No Trade Backs ’13)
13:51 – Do it with Malice – No Music (the Burned-Over District ’10)
17:35 – the Closers – Casualties (the Closers ’10)
20:04 – Curious Volume – About Anything (Mumbles and Whispers ’10)

23min of Ska : Mix Tape : the ’10s Side A (part 1)

MixTape00-SideAPart1It’s been a minute since I set up a virtual 90min mix tape (split across 4 episodes) dedicated to a decade. One reason it’s been awhile is well… I ran out of decades… but hey, look, we’re in 2020, the 2010s are behind us! Let’s go! Like always, this isn’t a “Best of 2010s Ska” at all, it’s a just a bunch of great music from that decade. I also made it a special point to play bands that I haven’t played in a bit, but were always really rad! When I switched over to trying to keep as current as possible, some of these great bands fell by the wayside, as they either broke up, had trouble recording new material, moved away from being a ska band, or put out great new material that superseded their older, yet still great work! Enjoy this episode and for the next 3 weeks some more gems that we shouldn’t leave behind as we continue on into the 2020s!

00:00 – the Fabulous Lolo Meets King Kong Girio – I know What I’ve Go (My Favorite Heart to Break ’15)
03:12 – Kevin Batchelor’s Grand Concourse – Leave it Alone (Kevin Batchelor’s Grand Concourse ’11)
05:55 – the Forthrights – Like a Child (Camp Birdman ’11)
09:12 – the Dropsteppers – Bring it on Home (Get Up in It! ’11)
12:53 – Mr. T-Bone & the Young Lions – Stop Crying (Nothing to Lose ’11)
17:13 – the Valuables – Stuck in the Middle (Reggae-Soul Dogs ’10)
20:14 – Mad Dog & the 20/20s – Buzzkill (Things We Shold have Said (But We’ll Dance to Instead) ’17)

23min of Ska : May Mix Tape : the ’70s : Side B (part 1)

MayMixTape70-SideBPart1Our sojourn into the world of ’70s ska and rocksteady continues! Finding all these great songs for this episode was a blast! I’ll admit that I’d never heard any of these songs until I submersed myself into it to create this episode. I don’t (and you shouldn’t) consider myself a ska expert, I’m just an enthusiast with enough free time on my hands to find great tracks and cobble them together for anyone willing to listen. This might be the best one yet, these are songs I know I’m going to personally revisit in the future and probably find out more from these artists!

00:00 – Iron Capone – Pop-A-Version (Pop-A-Version ’74)
03:00 – Max Romeo & the Hippy Boys – Clap Clap (Clap – Clap / You’ve Got Your Troubles ’70)
04:58 – Brent Dowe – de Pon the Wicked (de Pon the Wicked ’76)
08:28 – Ansell Collins – Cotton Dandy (Cotton Dandy / Don’t Get Weary ’70)
11:42 – the Heptones – Hypocrite (Hypocrite ’72)
14:41 – Junior Byles – Weeping (W-E-E-P-I-N-G / Magnus in the Morning ’76)
18:49 – Al Brown with Skin, Flesh & Bones – Here I am Baby (Come and Take Me) (Here I am Baby, Come and Take Me ’74)

23min of Ska : May Mix Tape : the ’70s : Side A (part 2)

MayMixTape70-SideAPart2Back again with another round of 1970s ska, or rather, ska and rocksteady! It’s part two of a 90min mix tape w/ a focus on the ’70s. Now let it be known that this isn’t a “best of the ’70s” kind of thing, just a bunch of great songs from that decade that have never been played on an episode of 23min of Ska before. I hope everyone else out there is enjoying this little history lesson as much as I do. It isn’t often that I have to do this much research, but I think everything is turning out awesome!

00:00 – the Gaylads – My Jamaican Girl (My Jamaican Girl ’71)

23min of Ska : May Mix Tape : the ’00s : Side A (part two)

00mixTapeA2And here we are again, still stuck in ’00s, hearing the bright sparks of ska bands that refused to throw in the towel, just because mainstream taste-makers did. I won’t lie to you, during much of the early ’00s, I didn’t abandon ska music, but I got much more insular and into the bands in the Midwest at the time before moving out to LA half way through that decade and trying to catch up w/ the ska that was going on in the world at the time. I feel as if I am still playing catch up, but I loved my local ska bands so much I wanted to give them all the support I could, sorry world ska scene, I’m learning and making up for it now! And this concludes side A of the 90min ’00s mix tape.

Infamous Jake & the Pinstripe Mafia – Standing Proud (This is the Beginning of the End ’03)
the Hijacks – Victim! Ain’t No Alternative (Free Your Mind ’07)
7 Seconds of Love – Looking for My Leopard (Danger is Dangerous ’08)
the Pinstripes – Find It! (the Decay ’07)
Synthetic Elements – Take Me Home (Synthetic Elements ’05)
Westbound Train – Fatty Boom Boom! (Transitions ’06)
Sonic Boom Six – For 12 Weeks, the City is Theirs (Arcade Perfect ’07)
