23min of Ska : Living on the Edge

23ska-redplaidHere we go with another awesome episode of 23min of Ska. There is some pretty fresh tracks on this one! Green Room Rockers cover of “Wagon Wheel” from their Ska is Dead II 7″, as well as “They Say” from the reunited Inspecter 7! Not to mention the final song here from Johnny Cakes & the Four Horsemen of the Apocalpso, I don’t think that album has even come out yet! The rest of these songs are from bands I’ve just recently got into, the whole album from the Pandemics is great and I don’t know how I’ve been missing the Amalgamated for the last few years. Finally for the first time I’m playing some bands with ska puns in their names… but the Good Skamaritans and Abraskadabra were just too good to pass over!

the Good Skamaritans – Sitting on the Edge of the World (Let’s Rawk ’02)
Green Room Rockers – Wagon Wheel (Career Opportunities / Wagon Wheel ’12)
Abraskadabra – Let it Die (Grandma Nancy’s Old School Garden ’12)
Inspecter 7 – They Say (Escapes & Illusions ’13)
the Pandemics – Sleepy Sunday (New York City) (Brain on Tap ’12)
the Amalgamated – Keyser Soze (San Diego Ska ’11)

Special : You Call It Vol. 2

So once again I went to the awesome listeners of the show (this time in /r/ska) and asked them what they’d like to hear. I looked at the suggestions, counted them, and considered some of their reasons and it has resulted in this brand new fancy episode. “Super Rad” and “a Better Place, a Better Time” were some of the most suggested songs, so they were picked as the opening and closing tracks. I’d never heard of los Capitanes before, and I’m so glad to have found them now! The other four songs are from bands that I like that, for some reason, I haven’t played as much as I should have! So I thank you listeners for righting that wrong! There was a lot of other great suggestions but a bunch of those bands I had just played in the last few episodes, and I like to keep a good variety going! Thanks again for the help, this was a blast to put together for all of you!

the Aquabats! – Super Rad (the Fury of the Aquabats! ’97)
los Capitanes – Feelin’ Seedy (No Fun Intended ’06)
Bomb the Music Industry! – 25 Hour Goddamn Telethon (Get Warmer ’07)
Mad Caddies – No Hope (Duck and Cover ’98)
Green Room Rockers – Northbound Train (Hoosier Homegrown ’07)
Mustard Plug – You (Evildoers Beware! ’97)
Streetlight Manifesto – a Better Place, a Better Time (Everything Goes Numb ’03)

23min of Ska : And Also Featuring

What do we all need. Ok, except for food, drinks and good music, what do we all need? Friends, that’s right, friends. So why do anything alone when we can do it with some good friends. And if we have enough, why not call over a few more? That’s exactly what was happening here, some great groups producing some great music with that little something extra. That is, an extra special guest on the song.

the Forthrights feat. Maddie Ruthless – Jaguar Queen (Head Above Water compilation ’11)
Manic Sewing Circle feat. Todd Hembrook – I Love You Baby (But I Don’t Have the Time) (Summer Spins ’07)

23min of Ska Interviews : Green Room Rockers

How lucky am I to interview, and you to hear my interview with Mark B. Cooper (Keys/Vocals) from the Green Room Rockers! This episode was a ton of fun to do, in fact, I ditched most of the formal interview and stuck in a lot of just the two of us talking because it is a lot more fun! Find out how Mark started the band, the fun of recording their self titled album and the true story behind the song “Confession”!

23min of Ska : We Survive

The great thing about ska is that it always survives. It has been what, 5 or 6 decades? That is pretty long lived. Nothing slows it down & it keeps us dancing. And us ska fans? We survive too, trends or not, it makes no difference, we just like ska. We survive, ska survives, long live ska! Yay!

23min of Ska : Midway

Here we are at the half way mark of the first year of “23min of Ska” and I think it has went pretty well. Originally I was only going to be doing one episode a month, so this would be the end, but no, I had to go and double it up and spread the ska love far and wide! Speaking of love and ska I can’t believe this is the first time I’ve worked the Skatalites into an episode! They are way too good! And Half Past Two I’ve been waiting to play for people since I first saw them at the LA 3 Floors of Ska a few years ago! All in all, this first 6 months of “23min of Ska” has taught me one thing, you can only prepare so much. This very podcast only contains 2 of the songs I was originally going to put in it! It was almost completed and I had 2min left to fill, that’s when things went out the window. One song didn’t follow the last so well, a few were too short and ended up being better picks so what to delete? It went like this for a while and I ended up with this, far superior than what I’d been intended to send out! Once again, I hope you enjoy the music and you share your enjoyment with others.

If you’re in a ska band and would like to be featured or if you know some music that you think I should hear for future inclusion, please email me at radjose[at]gmail[dot]com! I’ll play most anything.

You can also subscribe to the podcast by going to your advanced tab on iTunes, then select “subscribe to podcast…” and entering this: http://23minofska.podomatic.com/rss2.xml into the box that opens. But you know, there’s always downloading it. Oh, quick mention, I’ll be out of town on the 23rd this month, so I won’t be able to post the next episode on my site until a few days later, but if you subscribe to the podcast you should get it on time… just saying is all.
