23min of Ska : the Hunt for a Decent Ska Pun

Ska puns, I hate them. Sure you could say I’m no fun, and you might not be wrong, but really, there’s so much more depth and joy in this scene that ska puns just seem, oh so lame. A band has to be super good to overcome a pun name, let’s just leave it at that. So yeah, another fun episode, not where I intended to go with it, I just kept swapping out songs and ended up with this killer set. I hope you enjoy, and I hope you come back to listen next week!

23min of Ska : the Lovely Angels

I came of age in the ’90s, which means, yeah, I read a fair amount of manga. One of my favorites was always Adam Warren’s take on “the Dirty Pair” a sci-fi book that was ages ahead of the curve by decades in ideas, tech, and even the rise of horrible fan-types. It’s about 2 young government workers who are sent to help citizens, but are a bit accident prone so wherever they show up hijinks ensue. Self assured women whose work entertains? Seems like a good theme for a ska podcast…

23min of Ska Cross Over : the Rudie Librarian

On YouTube there’s a ska fan that loves books, this man is the Rudie Librarian! He’s a pretty great go to for any kind of book, even comics, and he talks about ska when he fit it in. But hey, it’s not just videos, there’s also a bunch of well written articles too! Brian is very talented and I’m happy to have had him pick a bunch of this episode’s songs!

23min of Ska : Hate the Beach

23skaCOMICShecticSo for the first time in a long time I was up so late perfecting this episode. I thought I’d had the music part done several times. One time I even saved it for publishing. Thing is, it didn’t feel right, the next few drafts didn’t feel right either. It took time, but “Hectic Planet” is one of my favorite and well missed comics of all time. Trying to capture what I like about the book using the music I dig most highly, and trying to promote a load of current ska bands, it is something that needs perfecting and perfection. If you’ve never read “Hectic Planet” you owe it to yourself to dig up the 3 collections out there and enjoy. And if the art looks familiar, it should, “Hectic Planet” artist and writer Evan Dorkin did a host of ska compilation covers throughout the ’90s. He’s a staple of the scene and a staple of my life.

23min of Ska : Both Feet on the Floor

23skatruckerbothfeetWhen I started this episode, and finished it a few weeks ago (sorry I’ve been working ahead a bit, I have been busy with my essential job (second aside: I don’t come into contact with many people, so don’t worry for me)) I didn’t expect the world to go to hell… I almost scraped this for a more pointed episode addressing America’s dire situation… but in the end this episode that I had assembled kept bringing me joy as I listened to it, and I want to bring you all joy as well in these, now very, troubling times. Be well my friends, take care of yourselves and care and help out others in need.

23min of Ska Convoy : the New, the Old & the Local

23skaTRUCKERconvoyMATTSka music has been a big part of my life for over the past 20 years. I even met my wife because of ska music. Being a teenager in Orange County, California in the mid 90’s you couldn’t escape ska music. However, when others stopped listening, ska music stayed in heavy rotation with me.

For this playlist, I followed a very simple plan to make it. I picked something old, something new and something local. Five Iron Frenzy, The O.C. Supertones and Less Than Jake are the bands I’ve been listening to the longest. Millington and The Skluttz are the newest bands on the list. Half Past Two, Hooray For Our Side and Codename:Rocky are some of my favorite hometown bands. I hope you enjoy my picks.

00:00 – O.C. Supertones – Supertones Strike Back (the Supertones Strike Back ’97)
02:37 – Hooray for Our Side – Don’t Panic (Overture ’15)
05:05 – Codename: Rocky – Ctl Alt Del (Reboot ’16)
07:22 – Less Than Jake – Motown Never Sounded so Good (Anthem ’03)
09:55 – the Skluttz – Ska Police (Confidence is Key ’20)
13:15 – Millington – Big Man on Campus (Millington ’18)
16:45 – Half Past Two – See You Again (See You Again ’20)
19:19 – Five Iron Frenzy – Cool Enough for You (Upbeats & Beatdowns ’97)

RJ sez: On the Upbeat is a hell of a fun podcast, go back and listen to the older episodes while the show is on break! And for full disclosure, Matt had picked different songs for Hooray for Our Side and Half Past Two, but after Half Past Two put out this killer new single we both knew it had to be included. This, of course, threw off the timing of the episode, so I offered up a change to the Hooray for Our Side song to even things out. Luckily Matt agreed and we have another rad episode!
