23min of Ska : Double Eighty-Eights

23skaTRUCKERdoubleeightyeightsTrucker lingo translation of the title: apparently it means “Love and Kisses” because it is double of the normal “Eighty-Eights” which means simply “Best Wishes.” But I’m finding a lot of trucker slang that translates to simply “Best Wishes” and I’m not finding more than one resource that says “Double Eighty-Eights” is even real trucker CB radio talk. I coulda been hoodwinked on this one my fine listeners, but you know, the intent was there to name it something sweet, because, it’s the kinda-sorta St. Valentine’s Day episode. Get into it!

00:00 – Catbite – Can’t Give You Love (Catbite ’19)
02:37 – Hepcat – Together Someday (Right On Time ’97)

10:06 – New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble – Love & Affection (Break Thru ’19)

17:51 – Doreen Shaffer – Nice Time (Adorable ’97)
20:51 – Moon Invaders – Baby I Know (the Fine Line ’11)

And no, I didn’t notice the band naming theme of the first 3 bands until I was typing this up just now. Not in the playlist making, not in typing the tracklist above or even in making the art, right now as I’m finishing everything up!

23min of Ska : the Moon Ska Special!

23skaMOON

cover photo : Meredith M. Goldberg

The Toasters album “Dub 56” was my intro into the big world of ska, I will always hold it in high esteem for that alone. Besides, it was a ripper of an album! It started a love of the sound that has never gone away. In my young lust to find more ska music, I took note of the label, Moon Ska, and the label catalog that came with the album. It wasn’t long before I was sending away for other CDs that Moon had released. Was I loving every minute of it? You bet I was! Moon was my label for more tradition sounding ska (I went to Dill and Asian Man for my ska/punk and to Jump Up for my local Midwest scene) and I could never get enough. It was a fair time before I met the man behind the label, Robert “Bucket” Hingly of the Toasters. I’m not gonna lie, me and Bucket aren’t pals in the least, and he could never pick me out of a line up of 3 goofy white boys, but he’s always been a good guy to me. It was years before when I’d see them on tour we’d even talk ska. Honestly, we usually talked about Jack Kirby and his work for Marvel (specifically Silver Surfer) or talk about the other bands on tour. He’s a top guy, never made me feel like an idiot about ska history (even when I kind of am) and more than that he’s always down to chat. That’s what I love about Bucket, he’s a man of the people, he’s an authority that never feels like it and he tears up the stage! I could talk more about Moon, but this episode really is just a love letter to Bucket. Thank you Mr. Hingly, see you on the road.

23min of Ska : 19th Hole

23skaGOLFWhy in the hell would I make an episode with such a tenuous link to a theme? As always, because I thought it would be funny. So I start going through my head, computer and CD collection looking for key words, and I kept finding great songs! These were songs that I hadn’t played on the show before! So, yeah, golf is kinda dumb, and I don’t even play, but a golf themed episode made me laugh and there was too many great songs popping up that I had to do it. If there was a patron saint of golfing I’d say they influenced me or something… wait… there is? And it’s St. Andrew… and I didn’t even play a single Scottish ska band on this episode? Er… damn, I wish I hadn’t looked that up right before I started typing this text! Anyway, water traps and sand pits ahoy, it’s damn time to take a few shots off of your game before getting out of the sun to retire to the bar in the country club for a few beers. Right? Nah, still boring.

Special : You Call It Vol. 6

23skaBEERSOnce again I reached out to my listeners on facebook and to those rude kids over on /r/ska and asked them what was the song that got you hooked on ska. Not so much the first song that you heard, but the one that made you think “man, this song is awesome, I love this, I need more of stuff this!” I’ll be the first to admit, this is all very ’90s centric, but it is when a lot of folks first heard of ska for the first time, so that kind of makes a bit of sense. I hope you all enjoy some music that other people picked out, and mixed by me, hell, I’d say that I’m on vacation!
