23min of Ska : Back in the Day…

If there’s two things that ska can’t seem to shake, it’s the ’90s and cover songs. So in that spirit I decided to just lean into it.

23min of Ska : Ginchy!

I’ve been reading Mike Allred comics pretty much since I got into comics. He’s a guy that makes me still love superhero comics, while bringing his indie idealism into the fold. Kinda like a lot of these bands. Kill Lincoln and Bite Me Bambi are taking that ska/punk sound and totally elevating it! And there’s also great tracks from Shandon, King Kong 4, the Skajects, and Smoke Like a Fish rounding out this episode like Laura Allred’s colors round out Mike’s line work! And that Rude Boy George track? It can’t be a tribute to the Allreds and “Madman” with out a bit of Bowie! (Also, that songs from the upcoming charity album “Block Buster : a Tribute to Glam Rock” Go pre-order it!)

00:00 – Shandon ft. Mr. T-Bone – Wrong Note (Back on Board ’16)
02:47 – Kill Lincoln – Greetings from Inner Space (Can’t Complain ’20)
05:50 – Bite Me Bambi – This Love is Dead (Hurry Up and Wait ’20)
09:32 – King Kong 4 – Going a bit Mad in Our Own Way (There’s Not Much You or I Can do About It ’17)
12:07 – the Skajects – Taken from the Start (Taken from the Start ’20)
15:38 – Smoke Like a Fish – Ready of Not (Smoke Like a Fish ’02)
18:35 – Rude Boy George – Moonage Daydream (Block Buster: a Tribute to Glam Rock ’20)

23min of Ska : Hate the Beach

23skaCOMICShecticSo for the first time in a long time I was up so late perfecting this episode. I thought I’d had the music part done several times. One time I even saved it for publishing. Thing is, it didn’t feel right, the next few drafts didn’t feel right either. It took time, but “Hectic Planet” is one of my favorite and well missed comics of all time. Trying to capture what I like about the book using the music I dig most highly, and trying to promote a load of current ska bands, it is something that needs perfecting and perfection. If you’ve never read “Hectic Planet” you owe it to yourself to dig up the 3 collections out there and enjoy. And if the art looks familiar, it should, “Hectic Planet” artist and writer Evan Dorkin did a host of ska compilation covers throughout the ’90s. He’s a staple of the scene and a staple of my life.

00:00 – We Are The Union – What’s Wrong with Me? (Self Care ’18)
02:23 – Kill Lincoln – Denial (Can’t Complain ’20)
06:01 – Upbeat Allstars – Breaking Point (Wake Up ’12)
08:26 – Fishbone – I Wish I had a Date (In Your Face ’89)
10:26 – Poindexter – Grounded (Poindexter ’20)
13:07 – Joker’s Republic feat. Dave Barry – Talking to Strangers (Falling Behind ’19)
15:47 – Offbeat Offensive – Lost in the Supermarket (Combat Cancer comp ’15)
19:08 – the Skalatones – House of Fun (House of Ska comp ’98)
21:33 – Half Past Two – Bitter (Camp Slushtone ’17)

23min of Ska : the Bad Time Records Special!

23skaBADTIME

Ok, so Bad Time Records is a newer label, but I didn’t want to discount them. They are the ska/punk label to be watching! Now, yes, the catalog isn’t that big yet, but it’s getting there and with quality! I’m doing something I don’t normally do, and that’s including compilation tracks from the same compilation. I’ve tried to avoid this, but damn if “the Shape of Ska Punk to Come: Volume 1” isn’t a killer comp, and the three songs included here are only scratching the surface of that awesomeness! They’ve done a few rereleases/first time on vinyl, so that’s why you see some records that are older than 2019 on here. It looks like they have some big plans for 2020 and I couldn’t be more onboard. If you have somehow missed these bands or Bad Time Records before, now you can safely be in the know with this episode an await their every release along with me!

00:00 – J. Navarro & the Traitors – No Control (the Shape of Ska Punk to Come: Volume 1 comp ’19)
02:31 – Catbite – Scratch Me Up (Catbite ’19)
05:10 – OMNIGONE – Six Feet Down (No Faith ’19)
06:20 – We Are The Union – MTV is Over, if You want It (Who We Are ’07)
09:10 – No Such Noise – Gorgon City (the Shape of Ska Punk to Come: Volume 1 comp ’19)
11:50 – Thirsty Guys – Bad Chemistry (Parched ’19)
14:23 – Kill Lincoln – Days I Spent Inside (Good Riddance to Good Advice ’15)
17:54 – Stuck Lucky – True Crimes (the Shape of Ska Punk to Come: Volume 1 comp ’19)
20:20 – DISSIDENTE / ДИССИДЕНТЫ – ‘Til Debt do We Part (Frontline ’17)

Also, I just dig this episode, so I hope you do too. It’s a little more “hard” than a typical episode, but I hope all of you still dig it.

00:00 – Madaline – Living and Fighting (“it is what it is” ’19)

23min of Ska : Rocky Road

23skaROCKYROADNever be too afraid to pause your life, for just a bit. Things happen, out of your control, and you need to take a pit-stop. You can’t do this too often, or even make a habit out of it, for if you do, you’ll lose you motivation to press on. We should always be making forward progress, but a short break from it is never a bad thing. Keep dancing, keep exploring and keep being awesome.

23min of Ska : Chocolate Frosted with Sprinkles

23skachocwsprinklesSomeone on Reddit told me that if I stopped making politically slanted episodes that this podcast might be worth listening to. You know something, I agree, I plan that last week’s episode was the beginning and end of all that! From now on, politically neutral. Just like ska is. Politics free.

23min of Ska : Pearls Are a Nuisance

23skaGUNGIRLWoah! Lots of new ska on this episode! Heck, some of these songs JUST came out! (I mean, except that Kill Lincoln track, that one’s about 5 yrs old) The one comment I get from people when they find out I do a ska podcast, or that I’m into ska in general, is “ska is still a thing?” As much as I want to lecture them on the long history of ska I just say “Yep!” And when listening to bands such as these put out music so recently that is so good, well, ska is going to be a thing for quite awhile!
