This wasn’t supposed to be an all covers episode… it really wasn’t… but when I got almost done w/ songs I wanted to play, I noticed all of them were covers songs, so I did make it a goal to fill out that last track w/ a cover as well. I dig it… and I really am not a ska covers fan, but darn if these aren’t all fantastic and can stand on their own, so I hope you all enjoy!

I’ve been reading Mike Allred comics pretty much since I got into comics. He’s a guy that makes me still love superhero comics, while bringing his indie idealism into the fold. Kinda like a lot of these bands. Kill Lincoln and Bite Me Bambi are taking that ska/punk sound and totally elevating it! And there’s also great tracks from Shandon, King Kong 4, the Skajects, and Smoke Like a Fish rounding out this episode like Laura Allred’s colors round out Mike’s line work! And that Rude Boy George track? It can’t be a tribute to the Allreds and “Madman” with out a bit of Bowie! (Also, that songs from the upcoming charity album “Block Buster : a Tribute to Glam Rock” Go pre-order it!)

So for the first time in a long time I was up so late perfecting this episode. I thought I’d had the music part done several times. One time I even saved it for publishing. Thing is, it didn’t feel right, the next few drafts didn’t feel right either. It took time, but “Hectic Planet” is one of my favorite and well missed comics of all time. Trying to capture what I like about the book using the music I dig most highly, and trying to promote a load of current ska bands, it is something that needs perfecting and perfection. If you’ve never read “Hectic Planet” you owe it to yourself to dig up the 3 collections out there and enjoy. And if the art looks familiar, it should, “Hectic Planet” artist and writer Evan Dorkin did a host of ska compilation covers throughout the ’90s. He’s a staple of the scene and a staple of my life.

Ok, so Bad Time Records is a newer label, but I didn’t want to discount them. They are the ska/punk label to be watching! Now, yes, the catalog isn’t that big yet, but it’s getting there and with quality! I’m doing something I don’t normally do, and that’s including compilation tracks from the same compilation. I’ve tried to avoid this, but damn if “the Shape of Ska Punk to Come: Volume 1” isn’t a killer comp, and the three songs included here are only scratching the surface of that awesomeness! They’ve done a few rereleases/first time on vinyl, so that’s why you see some records that are older than 2019 on here. It looks like they have some big plans for 2020 and I couldn’t be more onboard. If you have somehow missed these bands or Bad Time Records before, now you can safely be in the know with this episode an await their every release along with me!

Here’s a big batch of ska/punk for all of ya! The second track here is from a new compilation from Bad Time Records, check it out, lots of great new ska-punk on it! Also, I just dig this episode, so I hope you do too. It’s a little more “hard” than a typical episode, but I hope all of you still dig it.

Never be too afraid to pause your life, for just a bit. Things happen, out of your control, and you need to take a pit-stop. You can’t do this too often, or even make a habit out of it, for if you do, you’ll lose you motivation to press on. We should always be making forward progress, but a short break from it is never a bad thing. Keep dancing, keep exploring and keep being awesome.

Someone on Reddit told me that if I stopped making politically slanted episodes that this podcast might be worth listening to. You know something, I agree, I plan that last week’s episode was the beginning and end of all that! From now on, politically neutral. Just like ska is. Politics free.
