23min of Ska : Mix Tape : the ’10s Side A (part 1)

MixTape00-SideAPart1It’s been a minute since I set up a virtual 90min mix tape (split across 4 episodes) dedicated to a decade. One reason it’s been awhile is well… I ran out of decades… but hey, look, we’re in 2020, the 2010s are behind us! Let’s go! Like always, this isn’t a “Best of 2010s Ska” at all, it’s a just a bunch of great music from that decade. I also made it a special point to play bands that I haven’t played in a bit, but were always really rad! When I switched over to trying to keep as current as possible, some of these great bands fell by the wayside, as they either broke up, had trouble recording new material, moved away from being a ska band, or put out great new material that superseded their older, yet still great work! Enjoy this episode and for the next 3 weeks some more gems that we shouldn’t leave behind as we continue on into the 2020s!

23min of Ska : Wall to Wall and Ten-Feet-Tall

393Here’s something crazy… this podcast is 10 years old! Say what? I seriously do not believe it. On January 23rd, 2010 I posted the first episode of 23min of Ska, not knowing what journey I was about to embark on. It was just a little side project to do when not working on the reality show podcast I was working on at the time. In fact, I wasn’t sure if it should be 23 minutes or 15 minutes. To this day I’m still not sure, but 23 feels right.

When I started it wasn’t weekly, it was twice a month, with only one episode in January, so a new set of 23 episodes was starting on 1/23 each year. In my initial plans, I was going to do the show for 10 years, 2010 – 2020. Each year would have 23 episodes releases on the 11th and 23rd of each month after January. I still almost ended the show in 2016 when I get to the end of the original 9 sets of 23 episodes a process sped up by going weekly. I relented at the last minute because I love doing this show and thought that that would be too early to quit.

Now here I am, at my original ending day… and I still don’t want to quit. January 23rd, 2020 was supposed to be the first time I was not going to post an episode based on that plan. Kind of glad I didn’t. I’m more in love with ska and the ska community than I was when I started this show 10 years ago. This is the 18th set of 23 episodes, so we’re well on our way to doubling the number of my original plans by mid-2020. After that… still not going to quit! So buckle up, there’s still plenty of rad ska for me to share with you!

23min of Ska : the Homecoming Issue!

23skaHOMECOMINGOh man, it’s that time of year again in the States (or elsewhere as well, I’m a ska fan, not a historian of the world and its celebrations) where people head back to their small towns and take in a football game or whatever and the high school kids are all fretting about the big dance… yup, it’s homecoming season! So yeah, find that old jacket that’s been packed away for decades, blow the dust of the ludicrously expensive class ring, and maybe talk to some of the few cool people you went to school with… you know the ones, the ones in your “Screw the actual “cool” people” club! Yeah, all your friends! I swear, call both of them! It’s Homecoming mother bitches!

23skaCOASTER8Once again I’m just dropping a ton of new ska (with some well picked older song) on you! Hope that’s ok! More than that, I hope that your Summer is going well and that you’re all doing OK. It’s been a hectic one over here, getting the new house set up, oh man! But it’ll be great in a bit. 23min of Ska : Vanilla Frosted with Sprinkles

23skaVANILLASPRINKLESAlright, I’m not here to upset all you ska/punk lovin’ kids, but this week, well, this week I have a laid back episode for you. If it’s not your thing, I get it, but damn, are these songs smooth as hell. When I think of ska I think of it as an inherently cool genre, and it’s these kinds of songs that make me think that. If this kind of ska doesn’t do it for you, I feel sorry for ya son. And for all those that get it, man, I wanna give you all a dozen low fives.
