Special : In the Sixties… Vol. 4

23Ska60sBack, once again, is an episode of some fine ska from the original source. I know I usually play more modern ska on this podcast, but sometimes I think we need to hear the roots of the sound we love so much. This stuff is so good! I always vow to play more of it, but I don’t always get the chance, so here it is, and I hope you enjoy it. Note: the last three songs on here are all in contention for being “the first ska song” and they all came out and or were recorded around the same time, listen and decide for yourself!

02:41 – Lloyd Terrel – Bang Bang Lulu (Bang Bang Lulu / I Never Knew ’68)

08:23 – Roy Richards & the Soul Vendors – Summertime (Give Me a Little More Time / Summertime ’68)

23min of Ska : May Mix Tape : the ’70s : Side B (part 1)

MayMixTape70-SideBPart1Our sojourn into the world of ’70s ska and rocksteady continues! Finding all these great songs for this episode was a blast! I’ll admit that I’d never heard any of these songs until I submersed myself into it to create this episode. I don’t (and you shouldn’t) consider myself a ska expert, I’m just an enthusiast with enough free time on my hands to find great tracks and cobble them together for anyone willing to listen. This might be the best one yet, these are songs I know I’m going to personally revisit in the future and probably find out more from these artists!

00:00 – Iron Capone – Pop-A-Version (Pop-A-Version ’74)
03:00 – Max Romeo & the Hippy Boys – Clap Clap (Clap – Clap / You’ve Got Your Troubles ’70)
04:58 – Brent Dowe – de Pon the Wicked (de Pon the Wicked ’76)
08:28 – Ansell Collins – Cotton Dandy (Cotton Dandy / Don’t Get Weary ’70)
11:42 – the Heptones – Hypocrite (Hypocrite ’72)
14:41 – Junior Byles – Weeping (W-E-E-P-I-N-G / Magnus in the Morning ’76)
