23min of Ska : Always Double Down on Eleven

23ska-aceThere are certain facts in life. The sun always rises from the East, never drink OJ after brushing your teeth, and most of all, you always double down on eleven (not to mention, always split on eights). Most other advice in life isn’t worth the time it takes to comprehend the words others have spoken, but those 3 (4) hold fast. Don’t doubt them, and use these facts to go forth and conqueror the world. I also wanted to point out that there’s two songs in this episode that are making their world premier, the Pinstripes and the Dropsteppers have a new split 7″ coming out in the next few days, click on the album title for details where to get yr own copy!

the Pinstripes – Wake Up (Urban Pirate Booty Vol. 6 ’13)
Mustard Plug – Over the Edge (In Black and White ’07)
the Good Skamaritans – Everything’s Okay (Time to Save the World ’00)
the Dropsteppers – Right on Time (Urban Pirate Booty Vol. 6 ’13)
doctormanette – Fifteen Labels (the Same Thing Over & Over ’99)
Goldfinger – I Need to Know (Hang-Ups ’97)
the Prizefighters – One Thousand Words (One Thousand Words / Lost at Sea ’13)

Special : You Call It Vol. 2

So once again I went to the awesome listeners of the show (this time in /r/ska) and asked them what they’d like to hear. I looked at the suggestions, counted them, and considered some of their reasons and it has resulted in this brand new fancy episode. “Super Rad” and “a Better Place, a Better Time” were some of the most suggested songs, so they were picked as the opening and closing tracks. I’d never heard of los Capitanes before, and I’m so glad to have found them now! The other four songs are from bands that I like that, for some reason, I haven’t played as much as I should have! So I thank you listeners for righting that wrong! There was a lot of other great suggestions but a bunch of those bands I had just played in the last few episodes, and I like to keep a good variety going! Thanks again for the help, this was a blast to put together for all of you!

the Aquabats! – Super Rad (the Fury of the Aquabats! ’97)
los Capitanes – Feelin’ Seedy (No Fun Intended ’06)
Bomb the Music Industry! – 25 Hour Goddamn Telethon (Get Warmer ’07)
Mad Caddies – No Hope (Duck and Cover ’98)
Green Room Rockers – Northbound Train (Hoosier Homegrown ’07)
Mustard Plug – You (Evildoers Beware! ’97)
Streetlight Manifesto – a Better Place, a Better Time (Everything Goes Numb ’03)

Hey, be a pal, check out these ska records that I’m making over at the Big Ska Gamble!

Beat the Dealer : Heather’s 23 Minutes

A few months ago I was raising money for the Big Ska Gamble on KickStarter, and one of the prizes was putting together an episode of “23min of Ska”. I wasn’t sure if these were going to even sell! Imagine my shock that they sold, quickly! Also imagine my shock to find that my first donation was for this prize as well! On top of that, the donation was in excess of the actual donation request! If this sounds crazy, I also must tell you that it also happened within minutes of me making the KickStarter page live, before I even told people online it was good to go! I was shocked! That person was Heather. Heather’s a pretty cool ska fan and she’s brought to you some awesome ’90s ska to share. As you can tell she obviously knows her stuff and I’m pretty pleased to add this episode to my archive as the first (but not last) episode done by someone other than me. I’m not always the best at sharing, but Heather made it really easy with this fun mix! Oddly, I’m not sure if Heather and I met before back in the Midwest in the ’90s/’00s at a some show or not (I was usually drunk &/or too tired to remember anything but the music), but either way, I know her now through this podcast, and bringing people together through music, isn’t that part of what makes the ska scene awesome?

Rudiments – Spoon (Skank for Brains ’95)
Johnny Socko – If I Didn’t Have a Goiter (Oh, I do Hope It’s Roast Beef! ’95)
Ska King Crab – Inspector Gadget (Mission to Mars ’96)
One Eye Open – Paul Sharrar (Misfits of Ska comp ’95)
Mustard Plug – Thigh High Nylons (Big Daddy Multitude ’93)
the Exceptions – Angel Unreleased (Five Finger Discount ’96)
Vic Ruggiero – Always on My Mind (live) (Hellcat.com Slackers promo video ’99)
Telegraph – Rude Girl (10 Songs & Then Some : the Skolars Collected: 93-96 ’97)

23min of Ska : Lucky

If you get this on the 23rd then you’re either lucky you signed up for the feed, or you’re lucky that I managed to get this set up right! Either way, you’re lucky because you’re getting some awesome ska & ska/punk music! Think of this episode as kind of a sandwich, with two well known bands (Mustard Plug & Buck-O-Nine) as the bread at each end and then stuffed with regional favorites. Roscoe P. Soultrane was playing at the very first ska show I ever went and saw back in the day, I’ll always remember them fondly for that. And for the fact that the trombone player, Dave, got me into ska 2 years before that. No Reason Given is a band that is also close to my heart, a lot of good friends in that band. Even if I ended up in Indianapolis or Bloomington for any reason and there wasn’t an NRG show I was usually hanging out w/ some of them any way. I’m also featuring a song from Sgt. Scagnetti that my LA ska show friend gave to me as that’s who she grew up dancing to. That’s what ska is really all about, dancing, friends, good times! We’re all lucky to get it when we can.

If you’re in a ska band and would like to be featured or if you know some music that you think I should hear for future inclusion, please email me at radjose[at]gmail[dot]com! I’ll play most anything.
