23min of Ska : Help from Friends

So I’m just minding my own business, trying to promote this podcast (as well as www.BigSkaGamble.com) by invading people’s personal lives on twitter when a single delightful reply comes my way with about a half dozen suggestions on what I should be playing on this podcast. After a few exchanges back and forth about music, I came to learn about a ton of new bands that I’d missed and I had also made a new online pal. Some of her suggestions were already mixed into the last episode, but this one has a lot of stuff she flipped me on to, or I was listening to while tracking some of this down. This ones for you Bezz, thanks, now everyone, rock out!

23min of Ska : Something is Missing

Bucking the trends and going against the grain. Doing what you want, without a worry about shame. I don’t care what people say and how they define ska music, I know what I know. There’s nothing missing in any of these great songs, even if some would have you believe that there is. If you guess what is missing easily, then you’ve been paying attention. If you never figure it out because it is all such awesome music, then you’re awesome too. If you are at pains to figure it out after repeating this episode time and time again, don’t worry so much, it was never a contest anyway.

Drewvis – It’s All Good (Disposable Pleasures and Meaningful Pursuits ’11)
Operation Ivy – Artificial Life (Energy ’89)
Cartoon Violence – Attic (Whatever Happened to the Likely Lad? ’09)
My Superhero – Long Gone (Solid State 14 ’97)

23min of Ska : Let’s Do This

Indeed, let’s do this! Let’s do this episode! Let’s start dancing! Let’s start doing everything! So get out, get up in it and have a great time! Start something and start it today! Come on, let’s do this! In the spirit of “Let’s Do This” me and two friends drove quite aways, braving some awful LA traffic to see the Bohunks, the second band on this episode, and it was damn magical! Their song is followed up by Jorge and the Landladies doing an excellent cover of a Who song (a fact I didn’t know until Jorge told me and I had to hang head in shame). It is another fine collection of music for you to enjoy listen to, that I had fun putting together, see, we’re all winning!

the Bohunks – the City (In the Waiting Room ’11)

Special: Ska Round Table Vol. 1

When old ska fans get together to talk about the good ole days, they always want to share some of the songs from their adventures. In this episode, me, James and Randy hang out and talk about some of the biggest ska shows we’ve been to and some of the best ska shows we’ve been to, all the while sharing songs. Why James and Randy? Why because, like me, they also run their own ska podcasts! So yeah, it is like a big ska podcaster meet up, and you the listener are rewarded! There was a LOT of stuff recorded for this and to tell the truth, I thought the finished product was going to be a lot more talk heavy, but as I was editing it all together this was starting to take shape and BAM! I knew it was the way to go!

23min of Ska : Wedding Bells

In celebration of my recent wedding I cooked up this podcast. Is it a little mushy? Sure, but man, that’s what makes weddings a fun time. 23min of Ska : Over Flowing

Ska music, ever over flowing with happiness and mirth. It is not music for wallowing in a bad mood. It is music for cheering up or just keeping your happy going. It is music for dancing, celebrating and generally having a good time. That’s what we have here, a bunch of songs about throwing parties, having a great night out and the joys of mysterious ladies. Seriously listeners when you’re out this weekend may your fun and drinks be over flowing as well.

23min of Ska : It’s Complicated

This episode’s theme is songs that have only appeared on compilations. Say you’re a big fan of a band and have all of their albums, you still may have never heard these songs! That’s a shame, because there are some classic tracks on here! Seriously, I believe this is the only song from the Silencers that had ever been released. If I’m wrong, tell me, I really would like to know! Also, I think I may’ve stretched it with the final song but it is classified as a “video compilation” so I’d say I’m in the clear!

MU330 – Please Don’t Run (Ska is Dead ’07)
the Toasters – the Stage (Ska Island ’97)
Johnny Socko – Art Show (A Polka) (Misfits of Ska ’94)
Red Soul Community – Anymore (the Soul of Pum Pum Hotel Vol. 1 ’11)
the Silencers – Policeman (Give ‘Em the Boot ’97)
Blind Spot – As Far as Thieves Go (This is Raj and This is Ska ’95)
Greenhouse – 822 Anywhere (Smash Your Radio! ’98)
the Mighty Mighty Bosstones – Common Decency (Video Stew ’97)
