Yes, yet another ending for 23min of Ska. This is only the end of a volume, it’ll be rebooting next week, as always to bring you some more top ska! Hope you all dug the X-Men story line theme, I’ll take any excuse to dig through my long boxes, or (more likely) fire up my tablet and get wrapped up in these stories again. Once again, I hope I’ve spent the last 23 episodes bringing you a few new bands to follow, and reminding you of your old favorites.
Back again for another thrilling episode of 23min of Ska! Hope you dig this one! I have to say, it was a little tougher than I thought it was going to be, theme wise, but in the end, I feel like it came together. Heck even if the theme faltered a bit, with a line up of bands this solid it is still sure to a great episode! Hope you enjoy it!
It’s a new start for 23min of Ska, I hope that you all can be along for the ride again. This first episode of a new era for the show is a statement of intent in a way. I’ve been trying to include more new bands on this show since the start, I’ve also been trying to mix it up with the many styles of ska too, so that’s what I went after pretty hard here. I hope you dig it, and will continue on with me in my effort to try and find more varied and fresh ska to play for you folks!
Do you think I would even think of ending this podcast with out giving you all one last huge ska/punk episode? If ska/punk isn’t yr thing, I understand, I get it, but I love it just as much as I dig the more traditional sound. Ok, yeah, I’m still trying to figure out what the countdown means, I decided not to kill 23min of Ska a few weeks ago, but this has still got to lead someplace, and I don’t know what to do after this. There’s always been some kind of method to my madness, as random as it seems, that keeps be going, past the joy that listening to ska music brings me. I just need to find that next hook, that warp zone to the next level, and I’ll be set. I’m sure I’ll get there, I’m sure we all will. Life isn’t worth living if you not striving for next.
Why in the hell would I make an episode with such a tenuous link to a theme? As always, because I thought it would be funny. So I start going through my head, computer and CD collection looking for key words, and I kept finding great songs! These were songs that I hadn’t played on the show before! So, yeah, golf is kinda dumb, and I don’t even play, but a golf themed episode made me laugh and there was too many great songs popping up that I had to do it. If there was a patron saint of golfing I’d say they influenced me or something… wait… there is? And it’s St. Andrew… and I didn’t even play a single Scottish ska band on this episode? Er… damn, I wish I hadn’t looked that up right before I started typing this text! Anyway, water traps and sand pits ahoy, it’s damn time to take a few shots off of your game before getting out of the sun to retire to the bar in the country club for a few beers. Right? Nah, still boring.
Once again I reached out to my listeners on facebook and to those rude kids over on /r/ska and asked them what was the song that got you hooked on ska. Not so much the first song that you heard, but the one that made you think “man, this song is awesome, I love this, I need more of stuff this!” I’ll be the first to admit, this is all very ’90s centric, but it is when a lot of folks first heard of ska for the first time, so that kind of makes a bit of sense. I hope you all enjoy some music that other people picked out, and mixed by me, hell, I’d say that I’m on vacation!
Ok, so I found a few awesome ska covers this week and I wanted to play them for you. Then one thing lead to another and this became an all ska cover show. Note: I’m a pretty damn hard sell on ska covers in general, so believe you me, this is the cream of the crop when it comes to covers! Now, press play and get ready to start dancing!
Bang, this episode gets off with a real start! Hey, it’s a brand new song from the Backyard Superheroes off their brand new EP! It really kicks off this episode thematically too! That’s right, all these songs have a thing or two in common. It’s cool, you don’t have to guess, all the songs feature drinking in some form. Not saying it is good, not always even the focus of the song in question, but drinks, they will be had! And hell, why not, in America it is a holiday weekend, so pop corks and twist the caps, and have a great time!
The original idea for this episode was for each song to be from a solo act. From there I said “No! It should be all acoustic!” Now, to be fair, I didn’t make sure that they are all exactly acoustic songs, but they mostly are, so, you know, here’s a (mostly?) acoustic set of ska songs for you all to unplug and unwind to.
