23min of Ska : Kick Start My Heart

23ska roofI’m a fan of Kickstarter, have been for a long long time, pretty much since I’d heard of it back in ’09, and in my time I’ve backed mostly music projects, and of those mostly ska projects. I like being able to support the bands I love as direct as I possibly can, also, I like to support newer acts that just need that last bit of cash to get the record out. Here’s 8 songs from 8 bands that I have personally thrown down cash for. Trust me, you’re going to love this episode! No need to thank me, I’d’ve just spent that money on ska somehow anyway.

Big D & the Kids Table – Shit Tattoos (Stomp ’13)
the Shifters – She’s so Fine (In It! ’12)
Rude King – Remember (It’ll Probably be Alright ’13)
Something to Do – Man in the Black Sedan (Music for Fine Dining ’12)
PapaFish – 1 to 10 (the Lab ’13)
Uncle Joel’s Comb – Better Together (Tubular ’12)
the Loose Ties – Awesomer Than You (Champ of the Week ’12)
the Scotch Bonnets – Live Ya Life (Live Ya Life ’13)

23ska-blueplaidHere we go! Another week of great ska music! Old & new, from near and far, by friends and strangers, it’s all good stuff. This is the 111th episode of 23min of Ska all together, sure, I count the specials, bonuses, guest episodes and interviews differently, but that’s still 111 23 minute chunks of ska out in the world! Technically this is episode 73 of the regular standard 23min of Ska show, and that still BLOWS MY MIND! A little idea back in December of 2009 that started on Jan 23rd of 2010 has grown a lot! Thanks for sticking around, seriously! Enjoy the music!

Interview : Rude King

In this episode I’m talking to Jon Bravo, one of the lead singers from the Dallas, TX ska band Rude King. It was a last minute set up (my fault) and Jon rolled with it great! You can even hear the rest of Rude King in the background commenting on the conversation as it happens! Too much fun! Jon and I talk about the formation of Rude King, how the band started in Chicago and ended up in Dallas, the recording of their album “Ruder, Faster, Better, Stronger” and a lot of other ska bands that aren’t Rude King! So, yeah, we get off topic, but we always get back to Rude King. Jon also let’s us all in on what’s behind the song “Until the End” which is played near the end of this episode.

Check out Rude King’s website at : RudeKing.com

The intro for this episode is “Love Bomb” by Rude King, off of their album “Ruder, Faster, Better, Stronger”.

23min of Ska : Help from Friends

So I’m just minding my own business, trying to promote this podcast (as well as www.BigSkaGamble.com) by invading people’s personal lives on twitter when a single delightful reply comes my way with about a half dozen suggestions on what I should be playing on this podcast. After a few exchanges back and forth about music, I came to learn about a ton of new bands that I’d missed and I had also made a new online pal. Some of her suggestions were already mixed into the last episode, but this one has a lot of stuff she flipped me on to, or I was listening to while tracking some of this down. This ones for you Bezz, thanks, now everyone, rock out!

the Simmertones – Bring Your Love to Me (Everything’s Comin’ Up Ska ’11)
