23skaIllyaCongrats to all you fantastic listeners, you’ve made it through another one! That’s right, it’s the end of another 23 episodes. Thusly, the spy theme comes to an end. 23min of Ska : Swirl

23skaSWIRLSo here we go again! Oh yeah, it’s a covers episode. No, no, no, don’t let that scare you off! It’s ska covering ska! I mean that’s pretty neat, right? 23min of Ska : 16 Candles

23ska16Candles

This week seemed like the perfect week to dedicate an episode to one of the greatest movies from the ’80s, that’s right “Sixteen Candles!” What other movie would apropos to reference this week? There’s not a single one that I can come up with. I hope you enjoy it, it’s another one that was going one way and then at the last minute there was a sudden shift that made more sense song wise, but took me back the drawing board!

Rerun : Trinity

Once again, time and making records has got the best of me! I know, incredibly frustrating! All I have to do is sit around all day and listen to ska music and throw it all together for you to listen to once a week! You might be surprised, but I maybe put too much thought into it and too much pressure on myself to make these! So here’s an oldie but a goody, from way back when my only listeners were me, my friends Jen & Marianne and my cats, full of some great great music!

23min of Ska : May Mix Tape : Side A (part one)

Getting older makes on nostalgic for their youth and instead of just wallowing in it, I’m taking you on that journey. Throughout May I’ll be providing you with a 90min mix tape divided into 4 parts each Thursday. That’s not all, this mix tape will be set in the 90’s, when mix tapes were still king. The average year will more than likely be 1996 or 1997 when we come to the end of it. This is filled with music that evokes those years more than any other and are all mix tape “classic” tracks tracks for me. I hope you enjoy this month’s ride down memory lane for me. This is the stuff that got me into ska as a kid, it is my roots, and I don’t care that they are showing.

Goldfinger – King for a Day (Goldfinger ’96)
Less Than Jake – How’s My Driving, Doug Hastings? (Losing Streak ’96)
MU330 – Hoosier Love (Press ’94)

Special: Ska Round Table Vol. 1

When old ska fans get together to talk about the good ole days, they always want to share some of the songs from their adventures. In this episode, me, James and Randy hang out and talk about some of the biggest ska shows we’ve been to and some of the best ska shows we’ve been to, all the while sharing songs. Why James and Randy? Why because, like me, they also run their own ska podcasts! So yeah, it is like a big ska podcaster meet up, and you the listener are rewarded! There was a LOT of stuff recorded for this and to tell the truth, I thought the finished product was going to be a lot more talk heavy, but as I was editing it all together this was starting to take shape and BAM! I knew it was the way to go!

23min of Ska : We Survive

The great thing about ska is that it always survives. It has been what, 5 or 6 decades? That is pretty long lived. Nothing slows it down & it keeps us dancing. And us ska fans? We survive too, trends or not, it makes no difference, we just like ska. We survive, ska survives, long live ska! Yay!

Most of the music in today’s podcast was purchased at Amoeba Records. If you’re ever in California be sure to visit an Amoeba Records in Hollywood, Berkley or San Francisco or just make sure to support your independent record store where ever you are.

23min of Ska : Alive

If you’re into ska you know the very best thing is ska done live. I can honestly say that I’ve never left a ska show unhappy or disappointed and I can say for a fact that some of the best concerts I’ve ever seen were ska shows! For these reasons I knew that sooner or later I’d be doing a show of all live music, that and a few of these songs are only available live! I’m glad to’ve found “Man in Disguise” played by the band that wrote it! Johnny Socko has covered this for years, but it is nice to hear it from Bop (Harvey) who were working ska in their sound long before some of the rest of these bands even hit the scene. The ever name changing Stretch Magnifico was one of the earliest bands I saw live and you just can’t beat the Toasters! I close it out with the most classic of all Reel Big Fish’s songs. Ska, best when done live, there’s nothing to doubt about that.

If you’re in a ska band and would like to be featured or if you know some music that you think I should hear for future inclusion, please email me at radjose[at]gmail[dot]com! I’ll play most anything.

23min of Ska : Trinity

Here we are, another 23 minutes of ska. What’s really been fun with this project is pulling out some CDs that I haven’t listened to in years and rediscovering some old favorites. I hope this has the same effect for some of the listeners and introduces something new to others. And for the last song I couldn’t find my Catch 22 CD so I went with the Streetlight Manifesto version. Catch your copy by downloading it here.
