23min of Ska : Brush Your Teeth & Comb Your Hair

23skaTRUCKERbrushI always threaten to make an episode like this, but I usually back out (except that time that I didn’t!) This time, after hearing that great new Heavesbee track, I knew I had to go for it again! That’s right, it’s a totally “rude” episode! This one is for the lads, but don’t fret ladies, your time will come soon enough!

Here again, we have music from all over the world as well as from the last 20 odd years, as you know, I like to keep it modern where I can. There really is so much good ska since the hey-day of the ’90s that I can’t believe how blessed we are in the ska community. As always, this episode is the tip of the iceberg, follow those links, get some more music in you head and heart and see these bands live when/if you get the chance!

23min of Ska : Lagoon Nebula

23skaNEBULACheck that intro track! That’s a brand spankin’ new song from the Freecoasters! Great song, eh? Help them put it out and hit up www.theFreecoasters.com for their crowd funding effort! The band worked with Jessie Wagner to make something pretty damn awesome, so get on that! Oh, and this episode is about space. And water. Yep. That’s a combination that fits like a glove. That makes sense right? Right? Hey, outer space and the sea, it works. It’s a theme. Dig it!

23min of Ska : Fits

23skaSEAGUYSometimes we all need a fresh start in life, if you do, take it! As long as you getting out there and getting a new outlook, try to be slow to anger and avoid the snark of life. Renew. Refresh. Get ready to kick some ass! This world is yours for the living, so live it up! Keep going strong, and when you need a break take one. When you need a new start, head out in that direction with purpose! No half assing allowed from now on! Be in it to win it! What do you win? A life well lived, because trophies are bull shit. The only reward you get is peace of mind and a smile on your face, isn’t that enough?

23min of Ska : Envy

23skaENVYOk, I’ll admit, I tried my hardest to keep these episodes on theme for each of the seven deadly sins, but, man, Envy was way to hard. Maybe a few songs fit, but really not that much. I at least tried to use song titles that seem like they should be about envy, even when they’re not really in the end. There were some other good songs, but I’d already used them in previous episodes, I’m envious of those episodes for using those songs for no reason when they could’ve been saved for this podcast, if I had this idea earlier!

the Snails – Good’s Not Good Enough (Good’s Not Good Enough ’14)
Deal’s Gone Bad – Just Won’t Do (Heartbreaks & Shadows ’14)
Reel Big Fish – Everything Sucks (Turn the Radio Off ’96)
Chris Murray – Better to Know (Yard Sale ’09)
the Pandemics – Living in Your Shadow (Brain on Tap ’12)
the 27 Red – Better watch (Make Your Game ’03)
Isaac Green & the Skalars – Don’t Count (Skoolin’ with the Skalars ’96)

23min of Ska : Schooled

It is back to school time! Woo! Or not, I guess it is completely up to you how you feel about school and schooling, but that’s not what we’re here for, we’re here for some ska. I seriously couldn’t resist using Isaac Green & the Skalars, the Skolars & the O.C. Scholars in the same episode. It just seemed like the right thing to do. I know, the Skolars went on to change their name to Telegraph, but the original release of “10 Songs and Then Some” is by the Skolars and that’s just what I have. This Corey Dixon and the Zvooks song is a rare one from an Illinois based music compilation that never really got out much, so I just wanted everyone to hear it. Well, there you go, more ska & ska-punk to listen to while you ride the bus, slack off in math class or not do homework.

23min of Ska : Те́трис

In this episode I’m pushing the limits of third wave in a few directions. Some towards the punk side, one in the rocksteady direction and one even towards pop. One of the things I really liked/like about ska in general is how it can blend with other genres well and still retain its own sense of self. It was another awesome experience to put together for all you listeners, so I hope you enjoy!

Also, a thank you to listener Ben who suggested the Pinstripes which I used in this podcast. He’ll get a prize for that once I think of what it should be. If you’re in a ska band and would like to be featured or if you know some music that you think I should hear for future inclusion, please let me know!
