The Toasters album “Dub 56” was my intro into the big world of ska, I will always hold it in high esteem for that alone. Besides, it was a ripper of an album! It started a love of the sound that has never gone away. In my young lust to find more ska music, I took note of the label, Moon Ska, and the label catalog that came with the album. It wasn’t long before I was sending away for other CDs that Moon had released. Was I loving every minute of it? You bet I was! Moon was my label for more tradition sounding ska (I went to Dill and Asian Man for my ska/punk and to Jump Up for my local Midwest scene) and I could never get enough. It was a fair time before I met the man behind the label, Robert “Bucket” Hingly of the Toasters. I’m not gonna lie, me and Bucket aren’t pals in the least, and he could never pick me out of a line up of 3 goofy white boys, but he’s always been a good guy to me. It was years before when I’d see them on tour we’d even talk ska. Honestly, we usually talked about Jack Kirby and his work for Marvel (specifically Silver Surfer) or talk about the other bands on tour. He’s a top guy, never made me feel like an idiot about ska history (even when I kind of am) and more than that he’s always down to chat. That’s what I love about Bucket, he’s a man of the people, he’s an authority that never feels like it and he tears up the stage! I could talk more about Moon, but this episode really is just a love letter to Bucket. Thank you Mr. Hingly, see you on the road.

I ate a mini deep dish pizza for lunch. Later that night I had an ice cream sandwich. Somehow, I stayed with in my calorie count for the day, but man, did I feel like a fatty. Oh sure, I could go for a walk and do a dozen jumping jacks or something, but instead I just wanna eat a whole bag of cappuccino flavored potato chips instead while washing it down w/ some horchata beer. I guess I could dance to this podcast, that might help. But then, I’d just want to eat a dark chocolate and bacon candy bar. I’m kinda unhealthy…
Even more mid to late 90s ska excitement. Still in mix cassette form. As near as I can get in this digital age at least. This is the second half of the first side and maybe some of the names aren’t as big as were on the last one, but they run just a deep in my musical life as any of the rest. Heck, four of these bands I’ve seen live a hand full of times and they always brought the fun. Back when there was a ska show, just about every other week (where I grew up at least) bands that brought the house down live were what you wanted to go see, no questions asked, that’s what it was all about. A band just needed to get that crowd dancing, with punky excitement or steady grooves, it mattered not. If there were more people on the dance floor than standing with their arms crossed around the edges, if there were more soak through suits, dresses and t-shirts than there was dry, if there was hardly any barrier between the band and the crowd, well, you went and bought their tape or CD, you kicked in a few extra for some after show beers and you made sure to see them the next time they were near.

When getting into new ska bands, it is always a gamble. They could be good, they could be great, or they could outright suck. In this case, each of these albums I got with little to no knowledge of the songs on them, and everything turned out awesome! Totally awesome! I’m more than extremely pleased to share all these songs with all the listeners. Pay attention to the 3rd track by Infamous Jake & the Pinstripe Mafia, if you like it, check out the kickstarter campaign to re-release the album this track comes from on vinyl. All the proceeds go to charity, so not only are you rocking out, you’re rocking out for a good cause. Time to do some good and dance, let’s roll!

Here’s bunch of songs that I ripped from my seven inch record collection. The one thing I’ve always enjoyed is going to a concert and picking up a seven inch record from a band I just saw. I don’t know if it is because of the delayed time in between buying it and driving home before you can listen to it or if there really IS something special about how vinyl sounds. If you hear any pops or crackle… well, that’s kind of the point.
the Forthrights – Other People (Anywhere I Roam/Other People 7″ ’09)
the Smooths – Fish in My Bed (Kiss the Carnage 7″ ’95) the Amphetameanies – Good One Go (Nothing’s OK/Good One Go 7″ ’09)
