23min of Ska : Maxwell Smart

23skaSMARTThis episode of 23min of Ska was sourced by an insanely large ska CD & LP collection by 23 ska scholars. Would you believe it? Hmmm . . . Would you believe a handful of ska aficionados and a healthy stack of ska CDs? How about one sleepy guy with his browser opened on bandcamp.com sorted to “ska”? I hope I wasn’t out of line with that crack about my sleepiness or my lack of seriousness about creating this podcast.

23min of Ska : Sydney Bristow

23skaBRISTOWHere’s one for my ska/punk and “third wave” ska listeners! Get after it, it’s some fantastic rave-up kind of sound on the episode. Of course, I cool it down a bit before it’s over, just to let you off easy after the first 2/3rds. Full disclosure, Watashi Wa Dance Party is a punk band that sometimes does ska/punk, I think they do it pretty damn well, I hope all you listeners do too!

23min of Ska : Napoleon Solo

23skaSOLOOk… so… this is the 300th episode. It is also the first episode of 2018 and the first episode in a new set of 23 episodes all loosely based on fictional secret agents. But you’d think I’d have more to say about doing the 300th one of these, right? Personally, I cannot believe I’ve created 300 mini ska mixes to share with all of you. Every time an episode gets a share and a like on facebook, or an upvote on reddit, or a heart and a retweet on twitter I get a little happier inside. All those small things encourage me to want to keep sharing what I find and what I’ve found that’s great about ska music. Some of the messages I’ve gotten from bands and listeners have meant the world to me as well, seriously, you are all far too kind. Now, I’d like to say “Here’s to 300 more episodes!” While I cannot quite promise that, I can promise that this podcast isn’t going anywhere soon, so look forward to another 50 weeks of this show in 2018! (Sorry again about missing last week!)

23min of Ska : Wrath

23skaWRAITHWhen I started out putting this episode together I didn’t intend to start it off w/ some mid ’90s ska, it just worked out that way. Don’t be mad about it, sometimes I go looking for great modern ska, but sometimes I get reminded of a bunch of great music from when I was younger. So yeah, I dipped back into it, and pulled these awesome tracks to share w/ you. The rest of these songs will join those mid ’90s tracks in the fact that they’ve really gotten stuck in my mind since I’ve heard them. In fact, I had to triple check that I hadn’t used any of them before. Hopefully you’ll enjoy them all as much as I have.

23min of Ska : Maybe Try Bucking the System

23ska-redplaidTradition is great, but sometimes it can strangle you and hold you back. You need to know when “this is how it is, how it was & how it will be” is to be heeded and when it needs to be neglected. It’s a big distinction and will help you well in life once you know the difference. As always, good luck out there in the world, it can be a horrible place when oppression is afoot.
