23min of Ska : Keeping it Hep

On January 23rd, 2010 I posted my first episode of 23min of Ska online. It was a bit of fun and I thought I’d do a few episodes a month for a few years, get it out of my system, and move on. Get what out of my system? Why, to share ska w/ folks! Well, I should’ve known that idea was flawed, if I wanted to end after a short time, because (spoiler) I LOVE SHARING SKA w/ FOLKS, so here we are, 12 years later… and whoa… yeah… 12 years… I’ve moved 3 times and have gotten married since I started this thing… I don’t know what to do w/ that info other than say, I hope all of you all are enjoying it, and happy anniversary to 23min of Ska!

Woah, what a year it’s been! There’s been so much great and fun ska that’s come out in last few years! Oh yes, it’s been an embarrassment of riches and never been a better time than to be a ska fan! And blah, blah, blah, it’s late, I’m tired, I don’t think anyone reads these, so I’m gonna be direct… I think these songs are all both and worth your ear’s time, so listen up you slackers!

23min of Ska Cross Over : This I Know with Josh and Joe

When I started off this nutty run of crossover episodes, I started w/ Josh from This I Know with Josh and Joe, so now it’s Joe’s turn to help me finish it off. I’ve known Joe since he was a baby. He’s my cousin and I love him. I was going to make fun of him and put up super goofy picture of him, but I took the high road! Once you’re done w/ this go listen to the hilariously fun podcast he and Josh do!

23min of Ska : 23 Minutes of Four Color Ska

art credit: Richard Bruning, Josh Beatman & John SimsOk, here we are, ready to start another 23 episode cycle of 23min of Ska! As always, I hope you are ready to join in on music, find some new bands, and remember older ones… but not too much older. As you can see from this playlist, I try to keep it pretty current with just a handful of tracks from the past. So yeah, in the next 23 episodes you’re going to hear a lot of new ska, and yeah, there’s going to be a bit of a “comics” theme going on (hopefully not too annoying) but I hope you stick around if it’s your first time listening, and if not, thanks for coming back, I mean that! Thanks for listening and keeping up with the show!

23min of Ska : Watch Out for Smokey

23skaTRUCKERsmokeyThis episode was a lot more… let’s say laid back when I started it… but, it couldn’t stand… it just didn’t feel right. Keep fighting the good fight.

I love you all.

23min of Ska : Wall to Wall and Ten-Feet-Tall

393Here’s something crazy… this podcast is 10 years old! Say what? I seriously do not believe it. On January 23rd, 2010 I posted the first episode of 23min of Ska, not knowing what journey I was about to embark on. It was just a little side project to do when not working on the reality show podcast I was working on at the time. In fact, I wasn’t sure if it should be 23 minutes or 15 minutes. To this day I’m still not sure, but 23 feels right.

When I started it wasn’t weekly, it was twice a month, with only one episode in January, so a new set of 23 episodes was starting on 1/23 each year. In my initial plans, I was going to do the show for 10 years, 2010 – 2020. Each year would have 23 episodes releases on the 11th and 23rd of each month after January. I still almost ended the show in 2016 when I get to the end of the original 9 sets of 23 episodes a process sped up by going weekly. I relented at the last minute because I love doing this show and thought that that would be too early to quit.

Now here I am, at my original ending day… and I still don’t want to quit. January 23rd, 2020 was supposed to be the first time I was not going to post an episode based on that plan. Kind of glad I didn’t. I’m more in love with ska and the ska community than I was when I started this show 10 years ago. This is the 18th set of 23 episodes, so we’re well on our way to doubling the number of my original plans by mid-2020. After that… still not going to quit! So buckle up, there’s still plenty of rad ska for me to share with you!

23min of Ska : the July Issue

23ska17JULYHere’s a great batch of ska for you all today! So this is the “off week” where I’m not exploring a specific label, just, you know, listening to some dope as hell ska! The last song here is the kick off for a “song war” between Derrick Morgan and Prince Buster. Provided I can track down all 11 tracks, they will be filling in the last track slot on episodes not covering a record label. Fun, right? Well, I think it is, so get ready for it!
