23min of Ska : Swirl

23skaSWIRLSo here we go again! Oh yeah, it’s a covers episode. No, no, no, don’t let that scare you off! It’s ska covering ska! I mean that’s pretty neat, right? There was a ton of stuff out there for this episode, but I’ve played those songs before. Not going to lie, I thought it was going to be a challenge to find 23mins worth of songs that fit that theme that I hadn’t played before… I was wrong! This came together quite easily! Hell yeah! Good ska all the way around! Enjoy!

So much so, I got behind on my ska-filled duties. But I love ska, and I love you listeners, so much that I got the courage to rally! This one’s for all of you lovely folks who tune in each week!

23min of Ska : Chocolate Frosted with Sprinkles

23skachocwsprinklesSomeone on Reddit told me that if I stopped making politically slanted episodes that this podcast might be worth listening to. You know something, I agree, I plan that last week’s episode was the beginning and end of all that! From now on, politically neutral. Just like ska is. Politics free.

23min of Ska : May Mix Tape : the ’70s : Side A (part 1)

MayMixTape70-SideAPart1It’s May, that means it is time for another 90min digital mix tape, broken into 4 parts, with a decade spanning theme, this time it is the 1970s! Not gonna lie, this’ll be an odd month. Ska was really winding down in Jamaica in the early ’70s and wouldn’t pick up in a big way until the late ’70s in the UK. So it’ll be an odd mix, but an important one in representing some ska history.

23min of Ska : Shining Knight

23skaKNIGHTThe official 150th episode! Hurrah! It deserves the royal treatment! Also, I’ve been drinking red wine all night, then stayed up way to late to scrap half of this episode just so that I could make it better for all you listeners! See, I’ll totally go the extra mile, because after all these episodes, I still love ska music and my listeners so so much! Ok, that might be the wine talking, but it doesn’t make it less true!

23min of Ska : May Mix Tape : the ’80s : Side B (part 2)

MayMixTape-80s-sideBpart2

Here it is at long last, the exciting conclusion to my journey into ska from the 1980s! I’ll admit, I myself can’t understand why I’ve never included “Ghost Town” on 23min of Ska before, but I’m glad I saved it, it’s a hell of a song to end this mix on! Looking at the downloads and page views I still can’t tell if doing all ’80s ska for a month was a hit or a flop, either way I had fun learning about a lot of bands I’d either never heard of before or had only heard of in passing. I feel I’ve grown my ska knowledge w/ this virtual 90min mix tape, and I hope that my listeners have too, either that or have had a fun jaunt down memory lane!

00:00 – Mr. Review – Another Town (Walkin’ Down Brentford Road ’89)
04:30 – the Ska Flames – Samurai (Ska Fever ’89)
07:17 – Let’s Go Bowling – Dance Some More (Rude 69 / Dance Some More ’88)
10:29 – the Mighty Mighty Bosstones – Howwhywuz, Howwhyam (Devil’s Night Out ’89)
13:00 – Crazy 8′s – Rude Boys Don’t Win (Law and Order ’84)
17:05 – the Specials – Ghost Town (Ghost Town ’81)

23min of Ska : It Leads Up to This

23ska-bwplaidAt the end of the last episode it should be no surprise how I kicked this one off. Yeah, I was in the mood for some 2Tone bands, which then lead me into a listening session of other more traditional ska bands from the era I like to call “before I got into the ska music”. One of the things about ska is that it has so much riches in it, a lot of people focus on the early days with what was coming out of Jamaica, and some even on the British bands of the late ’70s/early ’80s, but there seems to be a lack of love for the late ’80s/early ’90s ska that isn’t ska/punk. As everything else that has to do w/ ska music, I still need to learn a lot more about it! I hope that mixing that sound along w/ some of the UK’s top acts doesn’t offend your listening sensibilities.

the Selecter – Tell Me What’s Wrong (Celebrate the Bullet ’81)

23min of Ska : Belly Drums All Night

23skaLOGANThis episode came together quicker than I thought it would, I knew a lot of great songs that I wanted to use and they all just snapped into place. My wife wanted me to put some David Bowie to see if any of you were paying attention, I laughed, but in the end only let her name this episode and pick the episode picture. So here it is, a new great episode of 23min of Ska for your Summer listening pleasure.
