The Toasters album “Dub 56” was my intro into the big world of ska, I will always hold it in high esteem for that alone. Besides, it was a ripper of an album! It started a love of the sound that has never gone away. In my young lust to find more ska music, I took note of the label, Moon Ska, and the label catalog that came with the album. It wasn’t long before I was sending away for other CDs that Moon had released. Was I loving every minute of it? You bet I was! Moon was my label for more tradition sounding ska (I went to Dill and Asian Man for my ska/punk and to Jump Up for my local Midwest scene) and I could never get enough. It was a fair time before I met the man behind the label, Robert “Bucket” Hingly of the Toasters. I’m not gonna lie, me and Bucket aren’t pals in the least, and he could never pick me out of a line up of 3 goofy white boys, but he’s always been a good guy to me. It was years before when I’d see them on tour we’d even talk ska. Honestly, we usually talked about Jack Kirby and his work for Marvel (specifically Silver Surfer) or talk about the other bands on tour. He’s a top guy, never made me feel like an idiot about ska history (even when I kind of am) and more than that he’s always down to chat. That’s what I love about Bucket, he’s a man of the people, he’s an authority that never feels like it and he tears up the stage! I could talk more about Moon, but this episode really is just a love letter to Bucket. Thank you Mr. Hingly, see you on the road.

I know I usually try to concentrate on playing all of ya’ll new ska, but yeah, this is a load of, well, older stuff. Much of it is music that I can’t believe I missed to be honest! Also, traditionally, this is the least downloaded/listened to podcast of the year. Maybe there’s something else going on that keeps people busy on a Thursday, who knows. Congrats to all you fantastic listeners, you’ve made it through another one! That’s right, it’s the end of another 23 episodes. Thusly, the spy theme comes to an end. This was a rougher session to put together than most, what with me moving and going out of town, and just being all around busy. I think I missed two weeks? This episode of 23min of Ska was sourced by an insanely large ska CD & LP collection by 23 ska scholars. Would you believe it? Hmmm . . . Would you believe a handful of ska aficionados and a healthy stack of ska CDs? How about one sleepy guy with his browser opened on bandcamp.com sorted to “ska”? I hope I wasn’t out of line with that crack about my sleepiness or my lack of seriousness about creating this podcast.

Ok… so… this is the 300th episode. It is also the first episode of 2018 and the first episode in a new set of 23 episodes all loosely based on fictional secret agents. But you’d think I’d have more to say about doing the 300th one of these, right? Personally, I cannot believe I’ve created 300 mini ska mixes to share with all of you. Every time an episode gets a share and a like on facebook, or an upvote on reddit, or a heart and a retweet on twitter I get a little happier inside. All those small things encourage me to want to keep sharing what I find and what I’ve found that’s great about ska music. Some of the messages I’ve gotten from bands and listeners have meant the world to me as well, seriously, you are all far too kind. Now, I’d like to say “Here’s to 300 more episodes!” While I cannot quite promise that, I can promise that this podcast isn’t going anywhere soon, so look forward to another 50 weeks of this show in 2018! (Sorry again about missing last week!)
