23min of Ska : Roof Access

This episode was brought to you by me locking myself out of my apartment last week. That’s right, all I had was my cell phone and my lap top and I put this together for you guys, that’s how dedicated I am to 23min of Ska and it’s listeners! I was literally sitting in the stairwell editing it together. After a while I tried to get out onto my apartments roof so I wouldn’t bother my neighbors so much. Unfortunately the roof access was blocked but I tried to imbue this show with spirit of the freedom of sitting on a building’s roof in the middle of town because it is the closest thing to the wide open space of a park for blocks.

23min of Ska : Seven Inches

Here’s bunch of songs that I ripped from my seven inch record collection. The one thing I’ve always enjoyed is going to a concert and picking up a seven inch record from a band I just saw. I don’t know if it is because of the delayed time in between buying it and driving home before you can listen to it or if there really IS something special about how vinyl sounds. If you hear any pops or crackle… well, that’s kind of the point.

the Forthrights – Other People (Anywhere I Roam/Other People 7″ ’09)

23min of Ska : Story Book

What’s the story fellow ska fans? I’ve got a fine new batch of songs ready to go! Oddly enough when I started this episode every song was from 1997 and 1998, but as the days went on I found more and more great bands that I just had include! Some of these I got by being super sneaky and stalkery on facebook, others I found when I went looking for new songs by other bands and happened to see mentions of these fine bands. Seriously, four of these bands I didn’t even know about until this month! The current state of ska continues to surprise and delight me. I couldn’t be happier to be putting together podcast for you guys every 11ish days, I hope you all continue to enjoy listening to this as I do making it!

23min of Ska : On Tour

It is Summer, when a young band’s thoughts turn to touring this great country of ours, to play shows, bring joy, dancing and maybe even sell a few records to folks away from their usual stomping grounds. There are trials a tribulations that every band must go through on the road and here collected are stories of a few of them. It is tough out there kids, so do what you can to support any band nice enough to come out near you! And like Dan sings in “Hang Tuff Hold Tight” “If your mind can’t add it up, then follow your heart.” So true, so true.

23min of Ska : Dimed

When I was putting together the last episode and including a song from Do It With Malice’s new album, I realized that I’ve hardly included any music from the year 2010 on a regular basis for the podcast! This episode it meant to correct that mistake by hitting you, over and over again with fresh 2010 ska & ska/punk! Of course, being out of touch I had to do some research and I found some really good new bands that put out some fresh awesome music, as well and remembering that there’s some classic bands that are still at it putting out quality albums. Really, I own 2 of these records, bought them when they came out and I still managed to forget that they came out this year! For 2011 I vow to no longer be an idiot while putting this podcast together!

Special note: This very day my fiance and I are planning our wedding 2,000 miles away from where we live, so if there’s a problem, e-mail me, I’ll try to fix it as soon as I can!

If you’re in a ska band and would like to be featured or if you know some music that you think I should hear for future inclusion, please email me at radjose[at]gmail[dot]com! I’ll play most anything.

23min of Ska : Return

It’s Thanksgiving time. A time to return home, see your family, hang out with old friends & maybe meet some new ones while you’re back in town for a few days. For some reason, Big D’s “Halfway Home” always reminds me of this time of year and a late night after some “Hey we’re all back in town, let’s hang out” kinda times. It might speak a lot more about me than anything else, but it’s still a damn fine tune. Also, speaking of meeting new people earlier, in the past month I’ve had the fortune of getting to know the band Do It With Malice and I’m pretty glad that I have. Nice guys, awesome sound and you can totally tell they’re having a ball playing these songs. I’m more than happy to share them here with all of you. Also, if the first song sounds familiar to you, Stinkfish later became the Siren Six and did a completely different arrangement of this song. There you go and that’s one to grow on. Hope you all enjoyed this episode!

If you’re in a ska band and would like to be featured or if you know some music that you think I should hear for future inclusion, please email me at radjose[at]gmail[dot]com! I’ll play most anything.

If you enjoyed Do It With Malice check out their website at http://www.diwmny.com and let them know and find when they’re touring near you so you can go, dance and say hey. Also, pick up their new album you cheapskate!

23min of Ska : Fallen

Oh heck yeah! More ska! This is about as far as I will go cheesy wise for a “Halloween” ska podcast. Firstly, Halloween is over a week away but I won’t deny that it is in the air. Secondly, man oh man, do I hate all the ska related puns that come with it as well. But maybe that’s just me. I sometimes feel a little cheap dipping mostly in to the mid to late 90s ska and ska/punk that makes up my collection, I feel like I’m just not keeping up as well with the more modern acts. But mostly, I hope you still like it, and if you want to educate me, hit me up with an message! I’d like to thank my friend Nicole again for getting me the Sgt. Scagnetti CD. I’d also like to note that Synthetic Elements used to be a fun, energetic young ska/punk band (I’ve got the CDs to prove it) but they’ve grown up to be a fun and energetic punk band who sometimes plays ska. I’m just saying this so if you decide to go pick up their in-print you’ll still get a solid CD, but just not a full ska one. Once again, I hope you all enjoy it!

If you’re in a ska band and would like to be featured or if you know some music that you think I should hear for future inclusion, please email me at radjose[at]gmail[dot]com! I’ll play most anything.
